August 5th 2015 Swatch - Garter Stitch Chevron

Copyright Janet Nogle © 2015

This swatch can be done in 1 or 2 colors.  If you are doing two colors you will need to cut the color you just used and go to the next rather than having the one color following alongside the work.  The reason is you do 6 rows of one color and 6 rows of the second color.  If you want to leave it alongside anyway, you will need to be careful when switch colors because you will need to pull the new color up from 6 rows and it tends to stretch or pull.  One color looks great as well as two.

This design is a multiple of 11 stitches so if I was making a facecloth I would probable make it for 39 stitches (33 sts for the pattern and 6 stitches for the side borders).

I used a size US #7 but a #6 would work too.  If you want to also make a towel to go with this, I would suggest casting on 55 + 8 border stitches which equals 63 total stitches.

Garter Stitch Chevron

Size: swatch is 5 X 5
I used 24 stitches for this swatch (22 + 2 border)

SKP = Slip 1 stitch knit wise, knit 1 stitch, pass slip stitch over the knit stitch.
KFB = Knit in front and back of stitch (check www.knittinghelp.com if you need assistance)
K2Tog = Knit 2 stitches together

Materials:  ½ skein of cotton yarn (for each color), one dark color one light color.  I used color A as white and color B as Black.  US #6 or 7 Knitting needles.

Rows 1-5 using color A, Knit 5 Rows
Row 6:                  Using color B, K1, *K2 Tog, K2, Knit in front & back of next 2 stitches, K3, SKP* repeat between *’s and end K1
Row 7:                  Using color B, K1, P22, K1
Row 8:                  Using color B, K1, *K2Tog, K2, KFB in next 2 stitches, K3, SKP* repeat between *’s and end K1.
Row 9:                  With Color B, K1, P22, K1
Row 10:                With color B, K1, *K2Tog, K2, KFB in next 2 stitches, K3, SKP* repeat between *’s and end K1.
Row 11:                With color B, K1, P22, K1
Row 12:                With color A, K1, *K2Tog, K2, KFB in next 2 stitches, K3, SKP* repeat between *’s and end K1.

You continue repeating the above rows until desired length has been met.  I repeated these rows two more times, then I repeated rows 1-11 one more time and I knitted one row with the Color B and then bind off,

Note: the knitting in front and back is done to create a point for the shaping.
